About TuskWise

TuskWise is a free, independent educational website about elephants, operated by Joshua Israel Ventures LLC. Our aim is simple: clear, accurate answers about the three elephant species, with every important fact traceable to a reputable source.

What we cover

We cover the African savanna elephant, the African forest elephant and the Asian elephant: how to tell them apart, anatomy, behavior and family life, intelligence and memory, habitats and diet, conservation status and threats, and how to see elephants responsibly. Start with the species comparison or the FAQ.

How we research and write

• Original writing. Every page is written for TuskWise. We do not copy text from other sites.
• Reputable sources. We rely on the IUCN Red List and its African and Asian Elephant Specialist Groups, WWF, accredited zoos such as the Smithsonian's National Zoo and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, government wildlife institutes, and peer reviewed studies. Each page lists its sources at the bottom.
• Dated numbers. Population estimates change and are hard to compare. We always say which year and which report a number comes from.
• No invented expertise. TuskWise is not written by elephant researchers or veterinarians, and we do not claim first hand field experience. We summarize what published experts have found. Where scientists disagree or evidence is thin, we say so.
• Original illustrations. Diagrams on the site are drawn by TuskWise. If we ever use photos, they will be our own, public domain or properly licensed and credited.

Corrections
